Adaptive Learning

Personalized practice that adjusts to each student's ability, identifies knowledge gaps, and builds optimized learning paths.

Overview

Testify's adaptive learning system tailors the assessment experience to each individual student. Rather than giving everyone the same set of questions, the system analyzes past performance and dynamically adjusts difficulty, selects topics that need reinforcement, and generates personalized learning paths. It combines adaptive practice papers, diagnostic assessments, spaced repetition, mastery predictions, knowledge decay tracking, and AI-generated study insights.

This system is designed for students who want targeted practice, and for teachers who want data-driven visibility into each student's progress.

Adaptive Learning Dashboard

How It Works

Adaptive Practice Papers

  1. Navigate to Adaptive Practice from the student dashboard.
  2. Select your board, grade, and subject.
  3. Choose a practice mode:
    • Weakness Focused -- concentrates on topics where you have scored poorly.
    • Balanced -- mixes weak and strong topics for well-rounded practice.
    • Exam Simulation -- mirrors a real exam with proportional topic distribution.
  4. Set the number of questions (default: 20) and optional parameters like duration and negative marking.
  5. Click Generate -- the system creates a personalized paper based on your improvement plan and past exam attempts.
  6. Complete the practice paper and review your results.

The adaptive engine can also be linked to a specific improvement plan or exam attempt, allowing it to directly target the weak areas identified in that context.

Diagnostic Assessments

Diagnostic tests identify knowledge gaps before targeted study begins.

  1. Browse available diagnostic tests filtered by subject, grade, or board.
  2. Start a diagnostic test -- these are typically shorter assessments covering broad topic areas.
  3. After completion, receive a detailed breakdown showing:
    • Score and percentage per topic.
    • Identified knowledge gaps.
    • Recommended focus areas.
  4. Diagnostic results feed into the adaptive practice system so future papers target your weak spots.
  5. Points are awarded for completion (40 base + up to 80 bonus based on score).

Spaced Repetition (Revision Engine)

The built-in spaced repetition system uses the SM-2 algorithm to schedule reviews at optimal intervals.

  • Questions you answer correctly are scheduled for review further in the future.
  • Questions you answer incorrectly are scheduled for sooner review.
  • The system tracks an ease factor per item, adjusting based on your response quality (0-5 scale).

Revision Dashboard

The dashboard shows:

  • Total active items -- questions currently in your review rotation.
  • Mastered items -- questions you have consistently answered correctly.
  • Due today / 3 days / 7 days -- upcoming review counts.
  • Average ease factor -- overall difficulty trend.
  • Subject breakdown -- due items by subject with mastery counts.
  • Recent sessions -- history of revision sessions with correct/wrong/skipped counts.

Running a Revision Session

  1. Open the Revision Dashboard.
  2. Click Start Session to begin reviewing due items.
  3. For each card, rate your response quality (0 = blackout, 5 = perfect recall).
  4. The SM-2 algorithm recalculates the next review date based on your rating.
  5. Session statistics (duration, accuracy, average quality) are recorded automatically.

Key Features

Mastery Predictions

The system predicts when a student will master each topic based on current performance trends.

  • Predictions are generated per topic and optionally filtered by subject.
  • Each prediction includes an estimated mastery date and confidence level.
  • Teachers can use these predictions to adjust pacing.

Knowledge Decay Tracking

Topics you have not practiced recently undergo knowledge decay.

  • The decay tracker shows which topics are at risk of being forgotten.
  • A summary provides an overall retention health score.
  • Topics with high decay are automatically prioritized in adaptive practice sessions.

Dynamic Learning Path Adjustment

Learning paths are not static -- they adjust based on your recent performance.

  • After each assessment, the system evaluates whether the current path is still optimal.
  • If performance dips on a topic, the path is adjusted to include more practice on that area.
  • If you are progressing faster than expected, the path accelerates.
  • Adjustment reasons are logged so you can see why the path changed.

Micro-Assessments

Short checkpoint quizzes embedded within learning paths.

  • Each learning path step can have a micro-assessment to verify understanding.
  • Micro-assessments are AI-generated based on the step's topic.
  • Submit answers and receive immediate feedback: "Checkpoint passed! You can proceed." or "Keep practicing -- review the topic and try again."
  • Passing a micro-assessment is required before advancing to the next step.

Study Insights

AI-powered analysis of your study patterns and habits.

  • Best study times -- when you perform best based on historical data.
  • Optimal session length -- how long your focus remains effective.
  • Topic affinity -- subjects where you learn fastest vs. slowest.
  • Consistency patterns -- how regularly you practice.

Balanced Study Schedule

The system can generate a balanced study schedule that distributes topics across available time slots, ensuring no subject is neglected.

Exam Readiness Score

Before an upcoming exam, the system calculates a readiness score based on:

  • Topic coverage in recent practice.
  • Mastery levels across required topics.
  • Knowledge decay status.
  • Diagnostic test results.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Start with a diagnostic test before beginning adaptive practice -- it gives the system a baseline.
  • Use spaced repetition daily -- even 10 minutes of review significantly improves retention.
  • Check knowledge decay weekly -- topics you have not practiced in 2+ weeks start decaying.
  • Trust the adaptive engine -- it may give you easier questions on topics you struggle with, which is intentional to build confidence before increasing difficulty.
  • Review study insights monthly -- adjust your study schedule based on when you perform best.
  • Complete micro-assessments honestly -- skipping or guessing defeats the purpose of the checkpoint.

For Teachers

  • View mastery predictions for your students to identify who needs help.
  • Use knowledge decay reports to plan revision sessions before exams.
  • Create diagnostic tests targeting specific curriculum areas.
  • Monitor learning path progress to ensure students are staying on track.
  • Online Exams -- exam results feed into the adaptive system.
  • Gamification -- practice sessions earn XP and points.
  • Analytics -- detailed performance data powers adaptive recommendations.
